The Artist

My name is Ty. I’m a Studio Art major at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and originally from North Carolina. My artistic journey has been shaped by extensive travel, hobbies, interactions, and interest. I specialize in digital and traditional printmaking often blending the two to create rich textures and immersive atmospheres. My style leans toward the edgy, surreal, and unconventional, deeply inspired by artists like Salvador Dalí. Art is a personal and intuitive process for me being driven by emotion, experience, and a constant desire to explore new techniques. While each piece begins from within, I allow each to evolve naturally while inviting viewers to find their own meaning in the art. I aim to keep my practice dynamic and evolving, always staying true to what feels authentic in the moment.

The Process

My primary medium is digital work and several printmaking techniques, including screen printing, wood block, etc.). My artwork consists of my interests and hobbies, thoughts and emotions, or personal experiences I’ve come across. I’m inspired by the things I eat, touch, see, and take in, from traveling abroad, watching a movie/show, or if I’m going skateboarding. There isn’t a particular single thing that I am set on. However, I am inspired by the knowledge and experience I gain daily. What influences me is the desire to understand an artist’s thoughts/intent behind their works. One artist I’m influenced by would be Salvador Dali. His work is chaotically organized, and the content varies from having purpose and meaning to not having any.

The Statement

Music drives my creative process. I typically start with my tablet if I do a piece in layers to screen print. If I’m just sketching, I will draw traditionally, then transfer it digitally to fine-tune it.  Depending on what I’m creating, my process will implement the texture and style I want to portray with my piece. Messages within my art will forever be changing because I’m forever changing.  The only cohesive note to my work should be my style. My work’s content tends toward “if you know, you know.” You will either recognize what I’m referencing or be curious enough to explore it. If it’s a piece expressing my emotions or experiences, it’s more about sparking thought than making a statement. I hope my work brings a reaction to anyone who sees it, good or bad.  I want the viewer to question it, remember it, hate it, love it, whatever feels right to them.  My goal is to reach people who collectively have similar vibes as mine through my art.
